Event description
Complex developmental trauma can be understood as the experience of multiple and/or chronic and prolonged, developmentally adverse traumatic events (including abuse and neglect) in early life. Research shows us that traumatic childhood experiences can have a profound impact on many different areas of functioning (attachment, biological, sensory, physiology, social, emotional and psychological). If we are to best meet the needs of young people and minimise the risk of further trauma, a thorough understanding of developmental trauma and its impact is warranted for anyone working with children who have experienced early adverse trauma. This training will provide an introduction into complex developmental trauma, including a space to reflect on how such knowledge can be used to improve our work with young people.
Training objectives
This course will:

  • Develop an understanding of the consequences of repeated traumatic experiences in early life

  • Provide a forum to develop skills and nurture attachment security when working with complex developmental trauma

  • Facilitate a space to reflect upon the impact of such trauma when working with children.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course participants will know how to:

  • Describe their knowledge and awareness of complex developmental trauma

  • Apply needs of vulnerable young people, particularly in the assessment and work with families

  • Implement opportunities to nurture skills in responding to children who have experienced adverse trauma. (Foster carers)
