Code: ASC/21/0311 Suicide first aid: understanding suicide intervention

The Suicide First Aid through Understanding Suicide Intervention course gives learners the knowledge and tools to understand that suicide is one of the most preventable deaths and some basic skills can help someone with thoughts of suicide stay safe from their thoughts and stay alive.

Suicide First Aid teaches a practical framework for interventions to be used when working with clients and service users or members of the community. Delegates will be more aware of risk factors that might lead someone to experience suicidal thoughts, spot the signs that an individual is at risk and feel confident in their response.

No previous experience or training is necessary. Participants will be asked to self-reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide. There is no expectation of participants to share their personal experiences.

As any of us could, at any time, encounter a person having suicidal thoughts, this training is open to a wide variety of staff and volunteers working with adults, children and families. It is free at the point of access.

Code: SCB/21/0171dd Children of Prisoners- School Support Programme “Impact of family member imprisonment: What can schools do? PRIMARY SCHOOLS ONLY

3 places remaining

When a parent or significant family member goes to prison the children left behind can feel traumatised and experience feelings of loss, anger, fear, confusion. The shame and secrecy surrounding parental imprisonment/offending behaviour leaves children feeling isolated and serving a hidden sentence themselves without dedicated support to help them sort through these feelings. Consequently, research has shown that the life outcomes of children with a parent in prison are worse than that of Looked After Children. (Barnardos, Every Night I Cry 2009)This includes lower school attainment.
It is estimated that Imprisonment affects 312,000 children in England and Wales each year. We can then safely assume that all schools will have registered pupils who are affected by the imprisonment of a close family member and in many cases, schools may not be aware who these pupils are. It is also true to say that school staff often feel unsure how to approach the subject when they do become aware. We believe that schools are in a unique position to aid these children and their families as school is quite often the place where children feel safest and more willing to express a concern.
This training programme has been designed to help school communities raise their awareness of the impact of imprisonment in order to help children and their families affected, speak out and access the support they need.
The training package seeks to provide school staff with the information, resources and tools required to improve the emotional wellbeing of children affected by imprisonment.

Two staff members per school may sign up for the training programme on 13/10/21.
One of the previous two attendees should also sign up for the Consultation Session on 12/11/21.
